Edmen Shahbazyan vs Gerald Meerschaert — Fight recap

Gerald Meerschaert submitted Edmen Shahbazyan via submission in the second round at 4:12 on August 24, 2024. Despite landing 48 significant strikes on 42 percent accuracy compared to Meerschaert's 21 of 44, Shahbazyan failed to convert his striking volume into decisive advantage.

Meerschaert controlled the fight's grappling exchanges, securing one takedown while Shahbazyan attempted none, and capitalized on a submission opportunity late in the round. Shahbazyan accumulated 2:21 of control time but could not establish the wrestling base needed to prevent the finish.

The upset result demonstrated Meerschaert's grappling acumen against a striker-oriented opponent and raised questions about Shahbazyan's defensive wrestling at middleweight.
