Israel Adesanya vs Sean Strickland — Fight recap

Sean Strickland defeated Israel Adesanya via unanimous decision over five rounds on September 9, 2023, in a striking-heavy contest that saw the challenger outland the champion significantly. Strickland landed 137 significant strikes at a 52% clip compared to Adesanya's 94 of 271 (34%), while also recording one knockdown to control the pace throughout.

Adesanya attempted no takedowns and managed zero control time, instead relying on volume but struggling with accuracy—particularly at range where Strickland's straight lines and aggressive forward pressure disrupted the champion's typically evasive gameplan. Strickland's head strike efficiency (85 of 186) proved decisive, and he landed 45 body shots to complement his leg kicks, establishing clear rounds on all three judges' scorecards.

The loss marked a shocking upset that sent shockwaves through the middleweight division and raised immediate questions about Adesanya's motivation and future direction.
