Lloyd Harris defeated Tommy Paul 6–4, 6–7, 6–3 in the semi-final of the Adelaide ATP 250 on hard court on 17 January 2020, in an upset of the pre-match favourite. Paul entered as the odds-on favourite at 1.81, but Harris, priced at 2.15, proved the stronger competitor over three sets. After taking the opening set convincingly, Harris was pushed to a tie-break in the second before recovering to secure the decider with a dominant third-set performance. The victory sent Harris through to the final and represented a significant scalp against a player ranked higher in the ATP standings at that stage of the season.
